The Fulbright Specialist Program, a part of the larger Fulbright Program, sends highly qualified U.S. faculty, administrators, and professionals abroad for periods of two to six weeks to share their expertise and strengthen institutions overseas while addressing shared challenges that benefit American communities and our world.
Specialists, who represent a wide range of professional and academic disciplines, share their knowledge, skills, expertise, and innovative ideas through projects that have been designed and requested by foreign receiving institutions in over 150 countries and other areas. Activities include, but are not limited to, delivering trainings or workshops, developing academic or training curricula, engaging in strategic planning, or conducting needs assessments and evaluations.
Generally, individuals must first apply for placement on the Fulbright Specialist Roster to be eligible to serve as a Specialist. However, each year a small number of Open Calls are issued, which accept applications from individuals who are not currently on the Fulbright Specialist Roster but otherwise meet all other program eligibility criteria.
Candidates applying to one of these Open Calls submit preliminary application materials for consideration by the foreign receiving institution. Should they be identified by the institution as their top choice candidate, final selection for the project will be contingent upon admission to the Roster and final approval by the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

Roster candidates serve a three-year tenure, during which they are eligible to view and express interest in available projects or be nominated for a specific project by institutions abroad.
