Santiago Vaquera-Vásquez: : unrepentant border crosser, ex-dj, and Xicano writer. Professor of Creative Writing and Hispanic Southwest Literatures and Cultures in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of New Mexico, he has also taught and lectured at universities across the United States, Latin America, and Europe. He has held Fulbright Fellowships in Spain, and Turkey, and served as a Fulbright Specialist in Poland. His books include, Luego el silencio (2014), One Day I’ll Tell You the Things I’ve Seen (2015), En el Lost ‘n Found (2016), Yabancı [Foreigner] Extranjero (2019) and Nocturno de frontera (2020). Commenting on his writing, Junot Díaz has said “Santiago Vaquera is literary lightning. He impresses, he illuminates, and when he is at his best you are left shaken, in awe.”

Kehbuma Langmia was a 2024 Fulbright Specialist at the Kosovo Department of Education, where he provided K-12 educators with best practices and thought leadership in the area of social media practices. He is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication Studies at Howard University.

Patricia Lynch was a 2023 Fulbright Specialist at Gorontalo Health Polytechnic in Indonesia. She is an Associate Professor of Nutrition/Dietetics and Director of the Didactic Program in Dietetics at Virginia State University.

Robin Hamilton is an Emmy-award winning television host, producer and moderator for townhalls and forums.  She is founder and principal of the ARound Robin Production Company, where she creates videos for non-profits to help with fundraising, marketing and messaging.  Working at the intersection of media and policy, Ms. Hamilton’s work is guided by the principle of providing information that can promote transformation.  Her company has also produced four award-winning documentary films about historical figures who have made a significant impact on society. In 2016, she served as a Fulbright Specialist in Burma, where she worked to create a communications campaign between local citizen organizations and the Burmese government.   She received two master’s degrees, one from New York University, with a concentration in broadcast journalism, and a second in public administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, with a focus on public policy and media.  

Suni Petersen earned a doctorate at the University of Florida. Her research focus was on health behavior change for disease prevention. After 16 years of clinical practice, Dr. Petersen began a career of research, teaching, and mentoring.  Her work focuses on underserved populations including her NIH supported studies on Mammography and reduction of Cardiovascular Disease in urban African-Americans in Philadelphia.  After moving to California, alongside her academic career, she started the Dragonflies Project in 2009 focusing on health behavior change to reduce parasitic disease in rural Vietnam. Dragonflies trains and hires indigenous women to work with other women in their villages. In 2017, Dr Petersen served as a Fulbright Specialist in Semarang, Indonesia to assist Dian Nuswantoro University in building research into their public health program.  The faculty and Dr. Petersen then brought the Dragonflies Project to Kalibening, Java, whose Department of Health adopted it.

Christopher M. Bellitto is Professor of History at Kean University in New Jersey, where he teaches courses in ancient and medieval history. A specialist in medieval and church history, his latest book is Humility: The Secret History of a Lost Virtue (Georgetown University Press, 2023). He has twice won grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities. He has been Visiting Scholar at Princeton Theological Seminary and a Fulbright Specialist in New Zealand and the Netherlands. Dr. Bellitto also serves as series Editor in Chief of Brill’s Companions to the Christian Tradition and Academic Editor at Large for Paulist Press. He offers public lectures frequently and is also a media commentator on church history and contemporary Catholicism.

Alumni Speakers:

Sheree Josephson served as a 2022 Fulbright Specialist at Radio ML in Tunisia. She is the Rodney H. Brady presidential distinguished professor, a former chair of the Department of Communication, and founding director of the Master of Professional Communication program at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. She recently returned from Tunis, Tunisia, where she was a Fulbright Scholar, working with the staff of a community radio station that focuses on serving underserved and disadvantaged listeners, especially those in the disabled community. Josephson is a noted eye-tracking researcher who has published two edited books: the second edition of “Handbook of Visual Communication: Theory, Methods, and Media” published by Routledge Publishing and “Visualizing the Web: Evaluating Online Design from a Visual Communication Perspective” published by Peter Lang Publishing. She has also published numerous journal articles and book chapters. Josephson worked as a journalist for 15 years before becoming an academic. In 2021, she was honored with the Service to Utah Journalism by the Utah chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Terik Tidwell is an award-winning innovator, investing in the capacity of individuals, communities, and organizations. Over the past 17 years, he has worked at the intersection of entrepreneurship, technology, policy, philanthropy, and education facilitating inclusive tech-based economic development. Recently, he received a Fulbright award within the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to develop a roadmap to accelerate innovation, entrepreneurship, and commercialization across the country. Tidwell currently serves as the Director of Inclusive Innovation and interim director of Innovation Ecosystems at VentureWell, where he leads the development, implementation, and evaluation of strategies, networks, policies, and programs to support innovators and institutions’ innovative capacity.

Prior to joining VentureWell, Terik was the founding Executive Director of the Smith Tech-Innovation Center and Director of STEM Innovation Initiatives at Johnson C. Smith University. While at JCSU he developed strategic partnerships and implemented innovative programs to enhance innovation, entrepreneurship, and tech-based economic development. During his six-year tenure, he acquired and managed $19 million in extramural funding from federal agencies, corporations, and philanthropic organizations.  His efforts led to the university being recognized as an Innovation Ecosystem Partner and the transition of a successful spinout company. In 2021, Tidwell was elected to a two year term to the joint-board of the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) where he facilitated the development of a roadmap for enhancing the innovative capacity for Minority-Serving Institutions. Additionally, he was a frequent consultant to major corporations, foundations, startups, and investors.

In the community, Tidwell is an advisor to the North Carolina Innovative Development for Economic Advancement Foundation and chair of the board for the Foundation for Black Philanthropy. He also serves as an advisor to Harvard Business Review, Greenlight Fund, HBCUvc, and Black Tech Ventures.

A New Jersey native, Tidwell is a former Google AI awardee, and a former Global Innovation Fellow and Young Leaders of Americas Initiative (YLAI) Fellow with the State Department. He has been published in IEEE and cited several times in major news outlets. His undergraduate and graduate studies include Technology, Finance, Marketing at Monmouth University, Fordham University Graduate School of Business, and Venture Finance at UC-Berkeley Law School.

Beth Michalec is a full-time faculty member and internship coordinator in the Corporate Communication Department at Penn State University Lehigh Valley (PSU-LV) located in Center Valley, PA.  She earned her Ph.D. in Rhetoric in 2020 from Duquesne University’s Department of Communication & Rhetorical Studies.  Her doctoral work included dual emphases in integrated marketing communications and the rhetoric and philosophy of technology, as well as a special interest in communication ethics. She has presented multiple single-authored papers at state, regional, national and international conferences, and her diverse research interests include corporate social responsibility, philanthrocapitalism, integrated marketing communication, social media, crisis management, and the ethical intersection of the public and private spheres of communication and innovation. Prior to her career in academia, Michalec served as program manager and executive director of the Robert H. Mollohan Family Charitable Foundation. She served as a Fulbright Specialist at the University of Zagreb in Croatia in 2022.

Doug Mitchell is the Founder and Director of NPR's Next Generation Radio.  Officially named in 2000, the program is a 5-day audio-focused, digital media "sprint."  That means each selected cohort spends a week with a mentor, creating a short form, non-narrated audio story, writing two pieces, producing video pieces, and sharing their work via various social media tools. Since 2013, the project has had 400+ alumni that are 72% women and 75% people of color. Roughly 40% of our alumni work in non-profit media, with seven working for NPR as full-time employees.

Doug spent 21 years as a producer and show director for NPR and has been an adjunct professor with the Newmark School of Journalism at CUNY and the Georgetown University Master's in Journalism program.  Also, he's done three international fellowships, each time to Chile. He served as a Fulbright Specialist at Catholic University in Chile in 2007.

Chaunda Scott is a professor of human resource development at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, and a recognized workforce diversity expert.  She earned a master’s degree in education administration focused in adult diversity education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a doctorate degree in organizational leadership focused in workforce diversity education from Teacher’s College, Columbia University. 

Her scholarly research, publications, and teaching interests are in human resource development, workforce diversity education, antiracism education, and social justice practices. Most recently in 2020, she was a recipient of the Academy of Human Resource Development’s distinguished R. Wayne Pace Book of the Year Award.  Additionally, she has received several diversity awards and been recognized as one of the Top 25 Education Professors in Michigan. In 2015, Dr. Scott received a Fulbright Specialist Award at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in South Africa where she engaged in staff diversity education and professional development.

Donna Oti is the co-founder of Communication and Culture, LLC, an organizational development firm, based in Madison, Alabama that helps small to medium size business improve communication effectiveness and organizational culture. As a journalist, communication professor, and organizational development consultant, Donna received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar award to University of Jos, Nigeria in 2004, after which she spent six subsequent years as a consultant for the University, and led initiatives to support a capacity building grant from the Carnegie Foundation of New York. She also served as a consultant for the West and Central African Research and Education Network, developing strategic communication plans and speaking at international conferences. Fifteen years later in 2019, Donna returned to the region as a Fulbright Specialist, collaborating with colleagues to facilitate new media workshops for journalism scholars and students in Accra, Ghana.

Fall 2023 Virtual Consultations for U.S. Applicants

The Fulbright Specialist Program offers 20-minute individual consultations for U.S. academics and professionals who are interested in applying to the Fulbright Specialist Program or campus Fulbright representatives promoting the program at their U.S. institution .

During these informal consultations, Fulbright Specialist Program staff are happy to answer your questions about the program and provide general guidance on completing the application.

Consultations are generally available for scheduling on most Mondays and Thursdays, between 10:00 AM and 5:30 PM ET.

Prospective applicants are also welcome to contact the program by email (fulbrightspecialist@worldlearning.org) or phone (202-464-6490). Questions received by email or phone will receive a response within one to two business days.

Catherine Pirkle is an Associate Professor in the Office of Public Health Studies at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Her research focuses on women’s health across the lifespan, in which she specifically looks at how experiences during childhood and adolescence contribute to the development of chronic diseases and disability. She also works extensively on the links between environmental issues, such as exposure to contaminants like mercury and lead, and their effects on the food security and wellbeing of mothers and their children. Her work has brought her to the Arctic, Bermuda, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Mali, the Philippines, Senegal, and South Africa. She has served as a Fulbright Specialist at Universidad de Cartagena in Colombia (2020) and Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil (2017).

As an advocate, educator, and collaborator for over 20 years, Karen Kwok, FNP-BC, MPH, CIC supported communities with their wellness agenda in Public Health Advisor and International Development Consultant roles. Karen’s areas of scholarship include improving access to primary health care and development of community partnerships with recognition from American Nurses Credentialing Center, Robert Wood Johnson, Bill and Melinda Gates Institute, California Governor Gray Davis, President Obama, and Peace Corps for her service. Karen has contributed to global health initiatives including capacity development, strategic planning, and program evaluation with Ministries of Health spanning Latin America, Central and Southeast Asia, and Sub-Saharan. She served as a Fulbright Specialist at the Ministry of Health in Kosovo in 2019.

W. Jesse Weins is Teaching Professor at Arizona State University, in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice and Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions. His work focuses on criminal and constitutional law and process.  Before teaching, he worked in juvenile case management and practiced public interest law and defense.  Jesse received his law degree with distinction from the University of Nebraska, where he served as an executive editor of the Nebraska Law Review.  He taught for 10 years at Dakota Wesleyan University, where he was an academic dean for 5 years.  Jesse is an alumnus of the Fulbright Specialist program, having spent the fall of 2018 at the Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law in Bhutan, where he developed a core course in legal skills and instructed the Himalayan nation’s first cohort of law students.

Rumu Sarkar was awarded a Fulbright (Specialist) Scholarship as an expert in international law. She lectured at the John Paul II School of Law in Lublin, Poland in 2016, and received a standing ovation from her 80+ Polish law students! As a result of her Fulbright connection, Professor Sarkar is an Assistant Professor at the Uniformed Services University, School of Medicine, Bethesda, MD, where she teaches international development law to the Pentagon’s active duty medical doctors and global health specialists.

Fulbright Specialist Program staff will answer attendee questions during this presentation, and you will also from two Fulbright Specialist alumni:

Laura L. Behling, Professor of English at University of Puget Sound, has teaching and scholarly interests 20th-21st-century U.S. literature and culture, as well as health humanities. As a Fulbright Scholar, she taught at Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic (2003) and served as a Fulbright Senior Specialist at the American University of Bulgaria in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria (2018). Her scholarly publications include: Gross Anatomies: Fictions of the Physical in American Literature (Susquehanna University Press/Associated University Presses, 2008) and The Masculine Woman in America, 1890-1935 (University of Illinois Press, 2001).  In addition, she edited Reading, Writing, and Research: Undergraduate Students as Scholars in Literary Studies (CUR [Council on Undergraduate Research], 2010) and The Resource Handbook for Academic Deans (Jossey-Bass, 2014).  For more than a decade, Behling has served in academic leadership, including positions as vice president for academic affairs and provost.

Ted Schwalbe is an emeritus faculty member at SUNY Fredonia, where he spent over 40 years as a Distinguished Service Professor. He was also chair of the Department of Communication for 19 years. He has written and been principal investigator for four major U.S. State Department media training grants in Albania, Bulgaria, southern Africa, and Turkey. The last grant involved teaching students to produce films about social issues in their cities and involved 72 students in 6 cities in Turkey. He has also been a very active member of the WNY/NWPA Fulbright Association chapter where he has served on the Board for over 20 years.

Schwalbe’s first Fulbright was U.S. Scholar Award to Bulgaria in 1997, and he has also received a U.S. Scholar award to Hungary (2004) and Fulbright Specialist awards to Swaziland (2002), Namibia (2007), and Albania (2017). Most of his teaching and research took place in Eastern/Central Europe and sub-Saharan Africa and focused on independent journalism and private media operation.
