Fulbright Specialist Program Information Session: Opportunities for Spanish Speakers

Join us to learn about the Fulbright Specialist Program and pathways for applicants with Spanish language skills. You will also hear from a panel of alumni who leveraged their Spanish proficiency during their Fulbright.

This online information session will include an overview of the program, including topics such as: 

• Eligibility requirements;
• Benefits for participating Specialists; and
• Application process.

Fulbright Specialist Program staff will answer attendee questions during this presentation, and you will also hear directly from Fulbright Specialist alumni.

While the majority of Specialist projects do not require additional language skills, Spanish is the most commonly requested language for projects taking place in Latin America. This information session is open to all prospective applicants, regardless of language skills, but will highlight past projects that drew on Spanish proficiency.

Dr. Kush Jenkins is a Full Professor of Accounting and Business at Northern Virginia Community College. With over 18 years of experience in higher education, he has served in leadership positions including Interim Associate Dean and Faculty Senate member, while maintaining professional industry experience in finance and taxation. As a Fulbright Specialist at the National Autonomous University of Honduras, he enhanced entrepreneurial education by strengthening faculty expertise in cutting-edge business strategies, developing integrated theoretical and practical curricula, and providing students with comprehensive tools for business development in global markets. Dr. Jenkins holds a Doctor of Business Administration in Accounting from Indiana Wesleyan University. He received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar award to Trinidad and Tobago in 2022.

Dr. Tim Hatten is a Professor of Business Administration at Colorado Mesa University, where he has served for over 25 years and has also held various administrative positions including Department Chair and Director of International Student Exchange Programs. As a Fulbright Specialist at the National Information Technology Park in Mongolia, he established business accelerator programs for technology startups and facilitated strategic partnerships between Mongolian enterprises and prominent U.S. accelerators. Dr. Hatten is the author of the leading textbook "Small Business Management: Creating Sustainable Competitive Advantage" and has guided student teams at CMU to national recognition in competitive business case competitions. Dr. Hatten holds a PhD in Marketing Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and is a two-time Fulbright U.S. Scholar to Denmark (2011) and Iceland (2001).

Dr. Jill Blondin is the Vice Provost for Global Initiatives at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), where she leads strategic internationalization efforts and global partnerships across the university. As a Fulbright Specialist at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in Brazil, she collaborated across five Brazilian higher education institutions to enhance their global education initiatives, and she will serve as a Fulbright Specialist at Romblon State University in the Philippines in summer 2025. Dr. Blondin previously directed VCU Globe, a global education living-learning program that received the 2015 NAFSA Senator Paul Simon Spotlight Award and the 2018 Andrew Heiskell Award. In 2023, she was named one of The PIE’s 50 Top Voices of North America’s international education sector and honored as the Senior International Officer of the Year by the Institute of International Education. A 2021-2022 Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) Presidential Fellow, she currently serves on AIEA’s Board. Dr. Blondin holds a PhD in Art History from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Dr. Andrew (Andy) Novobilski is a Professor of Computer Information Systems at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi. With 20 years of experience in higher education administration, he most recently served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Delta State University and Associate Provost for Research and Engagement and Chief Research Officer at the University of North Georgia, where he built infrastructure to support research growth at a predominantly undergraduate institution. As a Fulbright Specialist at Galen University in Belize, he supported the development of a 2+2 entrepreneurship program to enhance educational opportunities for American and Belizean students. An American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow, Dr. Novobilski has served in various other administrative roles including Provost at Gannon University, Dean at Arkansas State University, and Department Head at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Dr. Novobilski holds a PhD in Computer Science and Engineering from UT Arlington.

Terence Cavanaugh is a Professor of Instructional Technology at the University of North Florida's College of Education and Human Services and a Fulbright Specialist. With over 35 years of experience in education, including 17 years as a middle and high school science teacher, his work spans the intersection of technology integration, curriculum design, and science education with particular focus on digital textbooks and educational accessibility. As a Fulbright Specialist in Tuvalu, he worked with the Ministry of Education and secondary schools to enhance science curriculum and pedagogy to improve student outcomes in the Pacific Secondary School Certificate examination. Terry holds a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Instructional Technology from the University of South Florida.

Professor of Creative Writing and Hispanic Southwest Literatures and Cultures in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of New Mexico, he has also taught and lectured at universities across the United States, Latin America, and Europe. He has held Fulbright Fellowships in Spain, and Turkey, and served as a Fulbright Specialist in Poland. His books include, Luego el silencio (2014), One Day I’ll Tell You the Things I’ve Seen (2015), En el Lost ‘n Found (2016), Yabancı [Foreigner] Extranjero (2019) and Nocturno de frontera (2020). Commenting on his writing, Junot Díaz has said “Santiago Vaquera is literary lightning. He impresses, he illuminates, and when he is at his best you are left shaken, in awe.”

Patricia Lynch was a 2023 Fulbright Specialist at Gorontalo Health Polytechnic in Indonesia. She is an Associate Professor of Nutrition/Dietetics and Director of the Didactic Program in Dietetics at Virginia State University.

Robin Hamilton is an Emmy-award winning television host, producer and moderator for townhalls and forums.  She is founder and principal of the ARound Robin Production Company, where she creates videos for non-profits to help with fundraising, marketing and messaging.  Working at the intersection of media and policy, Ms. Hamilton’s work is guided by the principle of providing information that can promote transformation.  Her company has also produced four award-winning documentary films about historical figures who have made a significant impact on society. In 2016, she served as a Fulbright Specialist in Burma, where she worked to create a communications campaign between local citizen organizations and the Burmese government.   She received two master’s degrees, one from New York University, with a concentration in broadcast journalism, and a second in public administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, with a focus on public policy and media.  

Suni Petersen earned a doctorate at the University of Florida. Her research focus was on health behavior change for disease prevention. After 16 years of clinical practice, Dr. Petersen began a career of research, teaching, and mentoring.  Her work focuses on underserved populations including her NIH supported studies on Mammography and reduction of Cardiovascular Disease in urban African-Americans in Philadelphia.  After moving to California, alongside her academic career, she started the Dragonflies Project in 2009 focusing on health behavior change to reduce parasitic disease in rural Vietnam. Dragonflies trains and hires indigenous women to work with other women in their villages. In 2017, Dr Petersen served as a Fulbright Specialist in Semarang, Indonesia to assist Dian Nuswantoro University in building research into their public health program.  The faculty and Dr. Petersen then brought the Dragonflies Project to Kalibening, Java, whose Department of Health adopted it.

Christopher M. Bellitto is Professor of History at Kean University in New Jersey, where he teaches courses in ancient and medieval history. A specialist in medieval and church history, his latest book is Humility: The Secret History of a Lost Virtue (Georgetown University Press, 2023). He has twice won grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities. He has been Visiting Scholar at Princeton Theological Seminary and a Fulbright Specialist in New Zealand and the Netherlands. Dr. Bellitto also serves as series Editor in Chief of Brill’s Companions to the Christian Tradition and Academic Editor at Large for Paulist Press. He offers public lectures frequently and is also a media commentator on church history and contemporary Catholicism.
